Solar Manufacturing: To Compete or Not To Compete

The question is no longer whether America will be a major customer for the solar industry – we will. The real question is whether the U.S. will also continue to be a major manufacturer of solar technology, producing many new jobs for American workers. Some in Washington believe that the United States cannot, or should not, compete with China when it comes to solar manufacturing – and aren’t willing to make any investments or take on any risks to win the global clean energy manufacturing race. Meanwhile, China offered more than $30 billion in government backed loans to its solar manufacturing companies in 2010 alone and is surging to capture roughly half the market. That’s because China realizes this is a huge global market and a competition worth winning.
