California jail takes a shot at solar energy

California jail takes a shot at solar energy Wednesday, March 21st 2012 4:30 PM By GetSolar Staff. Alameda County's Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, California, which is the third largest jail in the state and the fifth largest in the country, recently announced that the facility could disconnect from the electric grid and switch to its own microgrid if all goes according to plan. The jail - which houses more than 4,000 inmates - is being assisted by scientists at the Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, who are using software they created called the Distributed Energy Resources-Customer Adoption Model, which looks at electricity and heat requirements to pinpoint the minimum cost of the jail meeting its energy needs independent from the electric grid.
