European heads of state have postponed making a decision on 2030 targets for renewable energy and greenhouse gas reduction, a move which was criticized by Greenpeace and the German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW). The European Council was set to take up the issue at its meeting on March 20–21st , 2014, but appears instead to have focused on the crisis in Ukraine and put off the decision until October 2014. BDEW Chair Hildegard Müller expressed her disappointment in this move. "I understand that given the circumstances, the international situation with Ukraine also priority in the deliberations of the European Council,” stated BDEW Chair Müller. “But I do not understand that the issue of a common European energy and climate policy is postponed again and again no agreement is reached on common targets for 2030.
