French energy giant Engie has rejected reports that it is mulling a takeover of EDPR, the Madrid-based renewables unit of Portuguese utility Energias do Portugal (EDP), but left the back door open for an eventual deal. Engie “has not taken any decision in relation to EDPR and currently is not preparing the launch of any takeover bid over shares issued by EDP Renováveis,” the French company says in a response to the Portuguese stock market regulator CMVM. But it adds: “Engie clarifies that as one of the major European utility companies with worldwide operations, it is constantly assessing investment opportunities.” The stock market regulator requested a statement about Engie’s intentions after the Bloomberg news agency reported that the French firm is among suitors considering a €7.3bn ($8.5bn) bid for EDPR, without revealing its sources.
