Reading: South African court rejects union challenge to renewable PPAs

A South African court on Thursday rejected a bid by a trade union to block the signing of 2.2GW of renewable PPAs, said the country’s wind power association. The Guateng High Court in Pretoria ruled against the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA), which was seeking an urgent interdict to stop the 27 mainly wind and solar projects concluding deals with state utility Eskom. The South African Wind Energy Association (SAWEA) said while it still awaits the full written judgment “it is our understanding that there is nothing in the law that now prevents the signing of the duly procured power purchase agreements”. If that proves to be the case, the court judgment removes the final obstacle to resolving a years-long saga that has battered confidence in the country’s clean energy programme. The PPAs – agreed as long ago as 2015 under South Africa’s REIPPPP scheme...
