Commission recommits to 35% climate funding target

The European Union (EU) executive revealed details of how it will spend the remaining €30 billion of the research and innovation funding including billions for climate, energy and circular economy projects. The scheme was criticised in 2016 by the EU Court of Auditors for allocating just 24% of Horizon 2020 funds to climate action, missing its 35% target. Announcing the new work programme for the final three years of the scheme last week, the Commission said the "ambition of investing at least 35% of its total budget for climate action becomes more important". The UK has benefited from £1.2bn (€1.6bn) of research funding from the EU Horizon 2020 programme in the past year.
